Philosophy
The pedagogical and values commitments that govern how and why we teach. This
document operationalizes vision.md into concrete principles.
1. The whole human, not the fragmented subject
We reject the factory model that splits a child into “reading,” “math,” and “science” bins. Learning is integrated: emotion shapes cognition, the body shapes emotion, and context shapes all three. Units weave domains together deliberately rather than teaching them in isolation.
2. Spiral, not linear
Content is not delivered once. Concepts return at increasing depth and maturity across grades. A child in Kindergarten explores “what is fair” through sharing; the same child in Grade 12 explores justice through political economy. The curriculum is designed as a spiral that respects developing minds.
3. Age-appropriate, never dumbed down
Appropriate does not mean shallow. Young children can and should engage with real questions — of fairness, of life, of the natural world — in forms they can hold. Difficulty is calibrated to development, not avoided.
4. Four lenses on everything
Every unit and lesson is read through four cross-cutting lenses:
- Ethics — What is right here? What are the consequences for others?
- Egalitarianism — Who benefits? Who is left out? Why?
- Global & anthropological — How do other peoples, times, and cultures see this?
- Technology & environment — What is technology’s effect on humanity and the Earth here?
These lenses are not optional add-ons; they are visibly carried in each lesson.
5. Evidence and values are distinguished
The curriculum is scientifically honest. Where content makes factual or scientific claims, it cites sources. It teaches students the difference between evidence, theory, and value, and models that distinction in its own writing. Claims about how things are are treated differently from claims about how things ought to be.
6. Agency and self-direction
The curriculum must work in a formal classroom and through self-teaching. Lessons include guidance for a teacher-facilitator and for a self-directed learner. Students are treated as authors of their own learning, not receptacles.
7. Critical thinking as a habit, not a unit
We do not teach “critical thinking” as a once-a-year module. Questioning sources, testing claims, and holding multiple perspectives is the default posture of every subject, every grade.
8. Cooperation over competition
Assessment and activity are designed to build cooperation, community, and mutual aid, while still holding each learner to a high standard. Mastery is individual; success is collective.
9. The teacher is a partner
This curriculum is not a script that de-skills educators; it is a scaffold that empowers them. Materials give strong structure and clear rationale so any facilitator — credentialed or not — can teach well.
10. Open by design
The curriculum is free, remixable, and versioned in the open. Knowledge belongs to everyone. Its license (CC BY-SA 4.0) guarantees it stays that way.
11. Inquiry over creed
We teach children how to think, not what to think. The curriculum is deliberately open-ended: big questions — where everything came from, what it means to live a good life, what the cosmos is — are explored as stories, frameworks, and questions, never as gospel. The Big Bang is offered to a kindergartner as a story to wonder at, not as a revealed truth to accept. We are not building a new religion; we are building inquisitive minds. Where multiple accounts exist (scientific, cultural, spiritual), we hold them side by side and let students weigh them with growing critical skill.
12. The end is health and flourishing
The deeper aim is that humans feel healthier — emotionally, physically, intellectually, and in relationship to their context. We are teaching in a world that is, in many ways, deeply unhealthy. The measure of this curriculum is not test scores but whether learners become more self-aware, more self-motivated, more capable of joy and belonging, and more able to care for themselves, each other, and the living systems around them.
13. Inquiry and instruction, balanced
We favor inquiry, story, and wonder for concepts and motivation — but we do not make
discovery a dogma. For foundational skills (reading, arithmetic, and other novice
knowledge), we use explicit instruction, worked examples, and guided practice,
because that is what the evidence supports (Kirschner, Sweller & Clark, 2006). The
right method depends on what is being learned and who is learning it. See
