Lesson 10 — The Changing World Wonder Fair
The unit closes where the changing world begins: learners discover that wind, water, and ice shape the land slowly over time — rivers carve valleys, waves wear cliffs, wind piles sand into dunes, ice scrapes and cracks rock — and then gather everything they predicted, tested, recorded, and found across the unit into a wonder fair, sharing and naming the wonders they will carry forward. A celebration of mastery, with no ranking.

Summary

Connection
Look at a river, a hill, a sandy shore, or a cracked rock. The land looks still, but it is always, slowly, changing. Water carries a river’s curve a little deeper each year; wind piles sand into dunes; ice freezes in a crack and pries the rock apart. These forces have been shaping the land for longer than anyone can count. And that is the whole unit in one idea: the world changes — and you now know how to watch it, test it, and find out.

Preparation
- Help learners gather their work from the unit.
- Set up the sand-and-water dish for the land-shaping demonstration.
- Set up a display space and decide how sharing will flow (gallery walk, circle share, or wonder walk).
Facilitator note
This lesson is written to the learner (“you”). Open with the concrete — pour water over a mound of sand and watch it carve a little valley (concrete before abstract) — then name the three shapers: wind, water, ice. Hold the changing land with hope, not fear: erosion is a natural, slow shaping that has always happened; where people worry about soil washing away, there are real, doable responses (planting roots to hold soil, terracing, caring for the land), and that is agency a child can hold. The wonder fair is a celebration of mastery, not a competition — no winners, no rankings, no “best” work; every share is welcomed exactly as it is. Keep praise about effort and wonder, not comparison. Retrieval is built in: recalling and explaining to a peer is the deepest kind of remembering, spaced and interleaved across the whole unit. Honor every body: sharing may be by speaking, pointing, signing, acting, or displaying work. End by gathering “what do you still wonder?” — and honor that some questions we cannot answer yet, and that is wonderful.
Procedure
- Gather (5 min). The world is always changing. Pour water over the mound of sand and watch it carve a little valley. Water shapes the land — and so do wind and ice. This has been happening slowly, for a very, very long time.
- Meet the three shapers (10 min). Water — rivers carve valleys, waves wear cliffs, rain softens the soil. Wind — it carries sand into dunes and wears rocks smooth. Ice — freezing water in a crack pries rock apart, and great sheets of ice scrape the land as they move. Name each one and point to a picture or a place you know.
- Set up your share (10 min). Gather your work from the unit — your fair test, your data table, your food chain, your plant, your states of matter, your forces, your day and night. Choose the piece you are most proud of, or the one holding your favorite wonder, and put it in the display space.
- The Wonder Fair (20 min). Visit each other’s work. When it is your turn, tell (or point to or show) two things: one thing you tested or found out, and one thing you still wonder about. Listen with kind ears and ask each other questions.
- One more wonder (10 min). On fresh paper, draw or write your biggest question to carry forward: “I still wonder…” Add it to the wonder wall or wonder book.
- Close (5 min). Look at all you did: you changed one thing, read the data, traced the food chain, named the plant’s parts, watched matter change, felt forces, and followed Earth’s turning. The world changes — and you know how to wonder, test, and find out. Keep wondering.
Differentiation
- Support: Choose one piece and share one sentence (“I tested…” or “I found out…”) with a partner first.
- Support (non-speaking): Display work and point to it; a peer or adult reads the label aloud.
- Support (blind/low-vision): Feel the sand-and-water valley with your hands, and share by telling and listening; a peer describes each displayed piece aloud.
- Extension: Write or draw three “I still wonder” questions and star the one you most want to explore next.
Assessment
- Formative (observation): Can the learner name one land-shaper (wind, water, or ice) and one thing they learned and one thing they still wonder across the unit?
- Self / peer: Learners tell one another one thing they liked about each other’s sharing.
- Portfolio: The gathered unit work plus the final “I still wonder…” page, as a record of growth.
