Developmental Rubric

The canonical reference the child-psychologist agent applies to every lesson and unit. It defines what “age-appropriate” means across grade bands, so that content meets a developing mind where it actually is.

This is a rubric, not a gatekeeper’s rulebook. These are broad ranges drawn from mainstream developmental science (Piaget, Erikson, Vygotsky, and modern cognitive-developmental work). Every child differs; ranges describe tendencies, not verdicts.

Principles

  1. Ranges, not gates. A band describes the center of a distribution. A lesson may reach a bit above or below for individual learners — that is what differentiation is for.
  2. Age-appropriate ≠ dumbed down. Appropriate means matched to development, never made shallow. A kindergartner wonders about origins as a story; a senior weighs competing cosmological models. Both are rigorous — differently.
  3. Emotionally safe scaffolding. Big, frightening, or painful topics are not avoided; they are introduced at a depth the age can hold, with adult support and a safe place to feel.
  4. Inquiry over creed at every age. Questions are offered as questions, evidence is distinguished from belief, and no account is imposed (see docs/philosophy.md §11).
  5. The spiral is the curriculum. What a band can hold is built on the band before it. A lesson is judged not in isolation but as a step on the spiral.

Grade bands

K–2 (ages ~5–8)

  • Cognitive. Concrete, here-and-now thinking. Learning happens through play, story, song, and direct manipulation. Abstract concepts need a tangible anchor. Theory of mind is emerging (they are learning others feel differently).
  • Social-emotional. Learning to name and regulate feelings; empathy is growing but egocentric. Belonging and safety are the central emotional tasks. Fairness is felt intensely, though understood concretely.
  • Physical. Big-motor activity is essential and abundant; fine motor is still developing. Movement and the body are part of every lesson.
  • Curriculum implications. Big questions (origins, the cosmos) are offered as stories to wonder at, not systems to explain. Science is observation and “why?” History is “then and now” through stories and artifacts. Ethics is sharing, taking turns, kindness.
  • Emotional safety. No graphic or frightening content. Death, injustice, and difficulty appear only as gentle, scaffolded stories with a caring adult present.

3–5 (ages ~8–11)

  • Cognitive. Concrete operations arrive: they can categorize, conserve, and reason about cause and effect when the objects are real. Beginning perspective- taking. Abstract reasoning is still hard.
  • Social-emotional. Friendships deepen; fairness and rules become central (and hotly debated). Identity extends to groups. Independence grows but still wants adult safety.
  • Physical. Fine motor matures; stamina grows. Hands-on building and experimentation suit them.
  • Curriculum implications. The scientific method can be done (predict, test, observe) on real phenomena. History becomes sequences and comparisons across cultures. Ethics becomes rules, reasons, and fairness dilemmas. Technology is introduced as a tool with effects, not just magic.
  • Emotional safety. Real-world problems (poverty, environmental harm) can be introduced with hope and agency attached — always with something the learner can do.

6–8 (ages ~11–14)

  • Cognitive. Formal operations emerge: abstract and hypothetical reasoning begin to appear, unevenly. They can hold multiple perspectives and begin metacognition (thinking about their thinking).
  • Social-emotional. Identity formation begins in earnest; peers matter greatly; self-consciousness and emotional intensity spike. They question authority and need reasons, not rules. Puberty remakes the body and its feelings.
  • Physical. Rapid, uneven growth; high energy. Movement and autonomy matter.
  • Curriculum implications. Systems and nuance enter: cause and effect across societies, ecosystems, and markets. They can debate, evaluate sources, and weigh evidence against belief. Ethics becomes real dilemmas, justice, and perspective. Origins can be taught as models with evidence (cosmology, evolution) alongside other ways of knowing.
  • Emotional safety. Heavy content (war, injustice, climate) is appropriate with structure and emotional support; avoid despair — always connect to agency and hope.

9–12 (ages ~14–18)

  • Cognitive. Formal operations mature: abstract, hypothetical, and counterfactual reasoning; strong metacognition. They can tolerate ambiguity and hold competing truths without collapsing.
  • Social-emotional. Values, purpose, and identity consolidate. They seek meaning and want to matter. Impulse control is still maturing (the prefrontal cortex is not done), so judgment can outrun regulation.
  • Physical. Near-adult; capable of sustained work and complex coordination.
  • Curriculum implications. The full curriculum: complex systems, global and anthropological history, political economy, rigorous ethics, evidence vs. values, and the deep effects of technology on humanity and the environment. Learners are treated as co-authors, not students.
  • Emotional safety. The hardest truths of the world can be faced honestly — inequality, ecological crisis, moral ambiguity — provided they are met with intellectual tools and a sense of agency, never nihilism.

How the child-psychologist uses this

For each lesson or unit under review, ask:

  1. Does it match the cognitive, social-emotional, and physical range of its band?
  2. Is anything too abstract, too frightening, or too advanced — or, equally, too shallow?
  3. Is it emotionally safe for its topic, with scaffolding where the topic is heavy?
  4. Does it hold questions as questions (inquiry over creed)?
  5. Does it build on the previous band (spiral) rather than jump?
