Lesson 5 — All About Me
Summary
Learners describe themselves with several facts — their age, likes, abilities, and family — and record them on an “All About Me” page. They begin to see themselves as someone with a real, describable story, and they notice that no two pages are alike.

Connection
You are a person with a story, and stories are made of facts. How old are you? What do you like to do? What can you do well? Who is in your family? These facts do not tell the whole story of you, but they are the first page — the page anyone could read to begin to know you.

- “All About Me” page template (boxes for age, likes, abilities, family)
- Crayons and pencils
- A mirror (optional)
Preparation
- Prepare or fold the “All About Me” page (four boxes: age, likes, abilities, family).
- Set out crayons, pencils, and mirrors.
- Arrange partners for sharing.
Facilitator note
This lesson is written to the learner (“you”). Prepare the page and supplies, then support learners as they fill each box. Family means many things — a parent, a grandparent, a guardian, siblings, chosen kin. Honor every shape; there is no “correct” family to draw. No two pages should look alike, and that is the point.
Procedure
- Gather (5 min). Think: what do you already know about yourself? Today you collect four kinds of facts: your age, your likes, your abilities, and your family.
- Fill the boxes (20 min). In each box, draw and write one or two facts. Age: a number (and your birthday, if you know it). Likes: a favorite game, food, or place. Abilities: one thing you can do well. Family: the people you live with or love.
- Add your face (10 min). Draw a self-portrait, or use a mirror to help. Look at your own face — it is the cover of your story.
- Share (10 min). With a partner, show your page and tell one fact. Listen to your partner’s facts. Notice what is the same and what is different.
- Close (5 min). Every page is different because every person is different. Your page is the first page of your story — and no one else has one like it.
Differentiation
- Support: Offer picture choices for likes and abilities; scribe the words the learner says.
- Extension: Add a fifth box — one hope or a fact about your community.
Assessment
- Formative (observation): Can the learner name several facts about themselves (age, a like, an ability, family)?
- Artifact (portfolio): The “All About Me” page, kept in the learner’s portfolio.
