Grade 10 Scope

How to read this scope

Each unit_id in the frontmatter resolves to a unit file under units/. start_day/end_day map the unit onto the 180-day school year; the list is a continuous sequence from day 1 to day 180 with no gaps or overlaps. domain and pillar name the primary domain(s) and pillar(s) each unit serves. domain_weighting expresses the intended balance of instructional time across the ten domains, in percent of the year. lesson_count counts the core lessons; the days between lessons carry flex time, assessment, integration, and celebration. assessment_plan describes how a learner’s growth is seen and recorded at this level.

Year at a glance

The Grade 10 year carries Grade 9’s synthesis outward into a position the learner can defend. This is the year a learner becomes a full co-author of their own mind and of the shared world — examining identity as constructed across cultures, critiquing rhetoric and moral argument for hidden assumptions, and meeting the hardest truths of history and the environment with intellectual tools, never nihilism.

The year opens inward. Feelings, Identity & Purpose (U.10.001, D01) continues Grade 9’s consolidation, examining emotion and identity through their cultural and historical roots, and holding a considered position on what defines them independent of labels. Body, Wellness & Movement (U.10.002, D03) reads the body as the somatic ground of thought and feeling, explaining how different cultures and times have understood the body–mind connection and assessing what evidence supports each. It builds sustainable habits and movement, reads fitness technology for what it reveals and distorts, and weighs what food choices cost the Earth — without shame for any body. Relationships, Community & Mutual Aid (U.10.003, D02) turns outward into care: de-escalation, cross-cultural empathy from within a community’s own history, and the mutual-aid networks that hold a society together.

The heart of the year is given to the three great tools of school. Language, Literature & Argument (U.10.004, D04) grows from Grade 9’s synthesis into criticism and craft: critiquing rhetoric, reading extended works whole, and shaping prose with deliberate style — always home language first, with multilingualism held as wealth. Mathematics & Reasoning (U.10.005, D05) climbs the next rung of modeling and proof: exponents and the complex plane, polynomial and exponential models, trigonometry, circle theorems, and the probability that reads everyday risk. Science: Systems, Evidence & Our Origins (U.10.006, D06) carries Grade 9’s evidence discipline into statistics and peer review, genetics and human impacts on ecosystems, motion and energy, and the Big Bang held as a model, never dogma.

Creative & Aesthetic Expression (U.10.007, D07) gives the imagination craft and an ethical eye, developing a personal style, composing, performing, and designing for a community need while honoring cultural appreciation over appropriation. Health, Sexuality & Safety (U.10.008, D03) meets the body with the honesty and agency high school demands, answering questions about sexual health accurately and judging the sources that claim to know.

The final third steps into the adult questions of power, justice, and the living Earth. Global History: Time, Culture & Atrocity (U.10.009, D08) gives the year its many-voiced human story — how societies measured time, colonization and migration, and a case of genocide remembered honestly, never as one nation’s triumph. Ethics, Justice & Political Economy (U.10.010, D09) turns that reasoning into critique and action: rebuilding moral arguments more fairly, weighing responsibility for climate harm and poverty, and designing collective action, restorative repair, and peacebuilding. Technology, Media & Our Earth Home (U.10.011, D10) gathers the outward year into stewardship — surveillance and automation, the promises and risks of AI, and the ecosystem services, tipping points, and circular economies the Earth home depends on. The year closes in All of Me, All of Us (U.10.012, D01 + D02), gathering the considered position, the caring community, and the living Earth, and looking ahead to Grade 11.

Throughout, the four pillars are interwoven. Intellectual awareness (P3) carries the most weight — criticism and craft in language, modeling and proof in mathematics, the systems-and-evidence discipline of science, and the creative work of the arts — while contextual and ecological awareness (P4) holds a large, steady share, for Grade 10 faces the hardest truths of history and the environment. Emotional and social awareness (P1) remains the ground: identity is examined and defended, and belonging matters more than ever. A known, cared-for, capable body-and-self (P2) is the foundation all of it stands on. Science (D06), global history (D08), ethics (D09), and technology and environment (D10) each carry a full unit and spiral deeper in Grades 11–12.
