Observation of a learner explaining how their history and culture shape their emotional experience and evaluating technology's influence on it; a social-and-historical construction-of-identity analysis across cultures; a written "considered position" on what defines them; a self-directed learning plan with goals, resources, and self-checks; and a reflection on balancing independence with seeking help, gathered as portfolio artifacts.

Unit 1 — Feelings, Identity & Purpose

Overview

This unit opens the year inward, building on Grade 9’s consolidation of identity, purpose, and values. Learners now examine and defend them: they explain how personal history and culture shape the way a person experiences and names emotion, and evaluate how technology and media influence emotional life — online comparison, empathy, and emotional contagion. They examine how identity is socially and historically constructed, comparing examples across cultures, and develop a considered position on what defines them independent of external labels and expectations. They direct their own learning by choosing goals, resources, and ways to check their progress, and balance independence with knowing when and how to seek help. Every self is honored as a whole in the making, never a label, and every question is held as a question.

Essential questions

  • How do my personal history and culture shape the way I experience and name emotion, and how does technology shape my emotional life?
  • How is identity socially and historically constructed, and what defines me independent of external labels and expectations?
  • How do I direct my own learning while balancing independence with knowing when and how to seek help?
