Observation of a learner analyzing how stress, sleep, and movement shape their mood and thinking; a body–mind traditions-and-evidence analysis; a personal movement plan built on progressive effort and recovery; a critical evaluation of a fitness tracker or app; an evidence-based evaluation of a popular diet or nutrition claim; and a food-footprint reflection, gathered as portfolio artifacts.

Unit 2 — Body, Wellness & Movement

Overview

This unit reads the body as the somatic ground of thought and feeling and as a system shaped by habit, building on Grade 9’s somatic basis of emotion and its movement-and-food-system work. Learners analyze how chronic stress, sleep, and movement shape mood, thinking, and long-term health, and explain how different cultures and times have understood the body–mind connection, assessing what evidence supports each. They apply principles of training — progressive effort and recovery — to build a safe and sustainable movement plan, and evaluate how technology such as fitness trackers and apps supports or distorts a healthy relationship with movement and the body. They evaluate popular diets and nutrition claims using scientific evidence, without shaming any body, and explain the environmental footprint of different foods and diets and how food choices affect climate and ecosystems. The body is taught with dignity and joy, honoring the wide range of bodies and abilities.

Essential questions

  • How do chronic stress, sleep, and movement shape my mood, thinking, and long-term health, and how have different cultures understood the body–mind connection?
  • How do I build a safe, sustainable movement plan, and how does technology help or distort my relationship with my body?
  • How do I evaluate nutrition claims with evidence, without shaming any body, and what is the environmental footprint of what I eat?
