Grade 6

Grade 6 is the year the self becomes many selves, and reason begins to hold more than one idea at once. The year opens inward — with the patterns behind one's feelings and a self seen as made of many shifting parts, then the body in motion and the changes of growing up — before turning to the heart of the year: reading for argument and text evidence, writing a claim with reasons and a counterargument, and mathematics that reaches ratios, rates, positive and negative numbers, one-step equations, and the center and spread of data. Science becomes systems and evidence: cells and the cycling of matter and energy, forms of energy and balanced and unbalanced forces, Earth's place in the solar system, and the habit of naming error and bias in an investigation. The arts become intentional — composing, notating, devising performance, and a full design cycle — while health returns with puberty, nutrition, risk, and self-care. Then the year turns outward: primary and secondary sources, power and movements for rights, fact versus belief versus value, democracy and its alternatives, and the fairness of who can use a technology and whose footprint the Earth carries. Formal operations emerge unevenly: abstract and hypothetical reasoning begin, peers and identity matter greatly, and heavy questions are met with structure, agency, and hope. The year closes by gathering every whole person and the caring community, and looking ahead to Grade 7.

Each unit_id in the frontmatter resolves to a unit file under units/. start_day/end_day map the unit onto the 180-day school year; the list is a continuous sequence from day 1 to day 180 with no gaps or overlaps. domain and pillar name the primary domain(s) and pillar(s) each unit serves. domain_weighting expresses the intended balance of instructional time across the ten domains, in percent of the year. lesson_count counts the core lessons; the days between lessons carry flex time, assessment, integration, and celebration. assessment_plan describes how a learner’s growth is seen and recorded at this level.

Year at a glance

The Grade 6 year is a spiral that deepens what Grade 5 began — and it is the year reason starts to hold more than one idea at once. Where Grade 5 learned to separate evidence from inference from opinion, Grade 6 begins to build systems out of those pieces, and to see the self as made of many parts. The year opens inward. Feelings, Identity & My Many Selves builds on Grade 5’s work of explaining how thoughts, memories, and body sensations shape a feeling: now learners identify patterns in their own emotional responses and name what tends to trigger them, and distinguish what a person feels from what a person shows, guessing the feeling behind a behavior. They describe their identity as made of many parts that can shift by context — family, culture, language, interests, beliefs — and examine how peers and media can influence self-image, describing a healthy response to negative comparison. They set a short-term goal, track their progress, and reflect on what worked, and use strategies to handle stress, distraction, or peer pressure while staying true to their own values. This is the year identity formation begins in earnest; the unit honors that by treating every self as a work in progress, never a verdict.

My Body, My Movement & My Growing Self then reads the body with new precision, building on Grade 5’s mind–body connection. Learners explain how emotions and body sensations connect — such as stress and tension — and name one way to release tension, learn a new movement skill through practice, feedback, and correction, and work cooperatively with teammates, sharing roles and encouraging others regardless of skill level. The body is taught with dignity and joy, honoring the wide range of bodies and abilities, and the uneven, rapid growth of these years is named as normal, never shameful. Friendships, Empathy & Belonging turns outward into the practice of care, where peers now matter greatly. Where Grade 5 gave kind feedback and divided tasks fairly, Grade 6 navigates a change in friendship and resolves a conflict using respectful, honest communication, and distinguishes assertive, passive, and aggressive communication — choosing assertion. They distinguish empathy, feeling with someone, from sympathy, feeling for someone, and use perspective-taking to understand why a peer acted in a way that upset them. They analyze how belonging can include some people and exclude others and why that happens, describe how identity — culture, language, ability — shapes belonging, compare cooperation and competition and when each helps or harms a group, and explain, in age-appropriate terms, why some people have more than they need while others lack.

The heart of the year is given to the two great tools of school, now working with real independence and a new power: argument. Reading, Writing, Argument & Many Languages builds from Grade 5’s fact-and-opinion and research report toward reasoned claim. Learners listen for and distinguish a speaker’s main argument from supporting details and examples, and participate in a group discussion, building on others’ ideas and disagreeing respectfully. They cite text evidence to support an interpretation of what a text says and means, and read and understand a variety of genres — fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and drama — in at least one language. They write a well-developed argument with a claim, reasons, evidence, and a response to a counterargument, and use technology to draft, revise, and publish writing, including basic formatting of digital text. They compare how the same idea is expressed in two or more languages, noting what is gained or lost, and communicate across a language difference using gestures, drawings, translation tools, and patience — always in the learner’s home language first, with multilingualism held as wealth. Ratios, Integers, Equations & Data grows from Grade 5’s decimals and the coordinate grid into the first true algebra. Learners use ratios and rates to describe and compare real situations such as fair shares, recipes, and unit prices, and use positive and negative numbers to represent real situations such as temperature and elevation, locating and ordering them on a number line. They use variables to write expressions and equations that represent real situations and solve one-step equations, represent the relationship between two quantities with a table and graph and tell when one quantity depends on the other, find the area, surface area, and volume of common figures and use nets to build and analyze three-dimensional shapes, and draw and use polygons on the coordinate plane. They recognize and describe statistical variability — the center, spread, and shape of a data set — and summarize a data set with mean, median, mode, and range, choosing the measure that best answers a question. Mathematics remains sense-making with real things, drawn from many traditions, for everyone.

From there the year looks out at the world through the lens of systems. Science as Systems & Evidence deepens the inquiry Grade 5 designed into an investigation of error and bias. Learners collect and organize data in tables and graphs and use them to support or revise a claim, and identify sources of error or bias in a simple investigation and suggest how to reduce them. They explain how cells are the basic unit of life and that some living things are made of a single cell, and describe how energy flows and matter — such as carbon and water — cycles through an ecosystem. They describe the forms of energy — kinetic, potential, thermal, chemical, and electrical — and how energy changes between them, and explain how balanced and unbalanced forces determine whether an object’s motion changes. They describe Earth’s place in the solar system and the scale of planets, moons, and the Sun, and explain how the rock cycle recycles Earth’s materials and how soil supports life. Making, Composing & Designing gives craft to the imagination at the moment formal reasoning emerges: learners use the elements and principles of art — line, shape, color, balance, contrast — deliberately to express an idea or feeling, and compare how the same subject is shown differently across two cultures or time periods, offering a reason. They create a melody or rhythmic composition and notate it so others can follow it, compare how two musical traditions express a shared theme such as celebration or grief differently, create a short performance that combines movement, voice, and one other element to tell a story, and compare how two traditions use movement or drama to express a shared theme. They use a full design cycle — research, prototypes, testing — to make something and document the process, and evaluate a product or building on how well it works, who it leaves out, and its effect on the environment. The arts of other cultures are met as living traditions to honor with respectful questions, never as specimens.

Healthy, Safe & Strong: Puberty & Self-Care returns to the body at a turning point. Learners describe the basic changes of puberty and that they happen at different times for different people, analyze a typical day of food and drink and identify one change that would better fuel the body, and explain how food is produced and transported and how this affects people and the environment. They assess everyday risks in play, travel, and online life and choose safer actions, and identify signs of stress or distress in themselves and name one self-care action and one person to talk to. Every body, every pace, and every family’s way of eating is honored; the body is taught with dignity, never shame. The final third steps into the wider human story with the new tools of the historian. People, Power & the Human Story explains the difference between a primary source and a secondary source and uses each to describe one past event, and describes change and continuity over a period of about a hundred years in one society. Learners explain how knowledge is passed from one generation to the next through oral tradition, written records, or apprenticeship, using examples from different peoples, and describe how a technology or idea spread between cultures and changed as it moved. They explain how people shape their environment and how the environment shapes people, and analyze how the movement of plants, animals, and people between world regions changed environments and societies, using one historical example. They explain what power is, who holds it, and how it can be used fairly or unfairly, and describe a movement for rights or freedom — such as a struggle against colonial rule or for equal treatment — and what its people did. History is told as a global story from many perspectives, never one people’s triumph.

Fairness, Justice & Shared Decisions turns those questions inward to the self and the group. Learners identify the difference between a fact, a belief, and a value in a short text or conversation, and describe a moral dilemma — two right-seeming choices in conflict — weighing the consequences of each. They distinguish fairness, what people deserve, from justice, correcting wrongs and protecting rights, and explain how rules, laws, or systems can treat some groups unfairly even when no one person intends harm. They explain the difference between a democracy, an autocracy, and other ways of making decisions and their strengths and limits, and describe how ordinary people have worked together to change something unfair, using a historical or local example. They analyze a conflict to identify each side’s needs and feelings and propose a fair resolution, and explain the aims and limits of restorative justice, comparing it with punishment. Questions are held as questions, never answered as dogma. Tools, Media & Our Earth Home closes the outward year by gathering everything together. Learners explain that technologies are designed by people with particular needs, wants, and values, and analyze who gets to use a technology and who does not, and why that matters for fairness. They distinguish between news, opinion, and advertisement and identify clues for each, and identify a persuasive technique — a loaded word or an emotional image — and how it tries to shape a view. They explain the difference between a population and a community and describe one relationship among organisms such as predator and prey, explain what biodiversity means and why variety can help an ecosystem stay healthy, explain what a footprint — the resources a person or place uses — is and compare the footprints of two different lifestyles, and evaluate a simple everyday choice, such as walking versus riding, for its effect on people and the planet. The year closes in All of Me, All of Us, gathering every whole person, the caring community they have built, and the living Earth — and looking ahead to Grade 7, where proportional relationships, evaluation of sources, and empathy across distance and difference will carry the same questions further.

Throughout, the four pillars are interwoven. Intellectual awareness (P3) carries the most weight — argument, text evidence, ratio and rate and data reasoning, and systems thinking in science are the year’s central work — but emotional and social awareness (P1) grows markedly, for identity formation and peers now matter greatly, and a known, cared-for, and capable body-and-self remains the ground all formal learning stands on (P2). Contextual and ecological awareness (P4) keeps rising: history moves toward primary and secondary sources, power, and movements for rights; civics toward fact-versus-belief-versus-value, real dilemmas, and democracy compared with its alternatives; and media and ecology toward who uses technology, persuasive technique, biodiversity, footprints, and trade-offs. Abstract and hypothetical reasoning appear but unevenly — the curriculum introduces them gradually, always with a concrete anchor, structure, and hope. No high-stakes tests anywhere: a learner’s growth is seen through argument and cited reading, number and data work with real things, investigations that name error and bias, made and performed and designed works, and a portfolio of what they say, make, and do.
