Ratios, Integers, Equations & Data
Objectives
- D05.S1.06.01 Use ratios and rates to describe and compare real situations such as fair shares, recipes, and unit prices.
- D05.S1.06.02 Use positive and negative numbers to represent real situations such as temperature and elevation, and locate and order them on a number line.
- D05.S2.06.01 Use variables to write expressions and equations that represent real situations, and solve one-step equations.
- D05.S2.06.02 Represent the relationship between two quantities with a table and graph, and tell when one quantity depends on the other.
- D05.S3.06.01 Find area, surface area, and volume of common figures and use nets to build and analyze three-dimensional shapes.
- D05.S3.06.02 Draw and use polygons on the coordinate plane to solve real problems involving position and length.
- D05.S4.06.01 Recognize and describe statistical variability, including the center, spread, and shape of a data set.
- D05.S4.06.02 Summarize a data set with mean, median, mode, and range, and choose the measure that best answers a question.
Essential questions
- How do ratios, rates, and positive and negative numbers describe real situations?
- How do equations, the coordinate plane, and data summaries help me reason and decide?
Big ideas
- Ratios and rates compare real quantities, and positive and negative numbers represent situations such as temperature and elevation.
- Variables, one-step equations, tables and graphs, three-dimensional shapes on the coordinate plane, and measures of center and spread are tools for reasoning honestly about quantity.

Assessment plan
One-on-one ratio, integer, and equation check-ins with real objects, and coordinate-plane and data tasks observed; a ratio-and-rate problem set, a one-step equation task, and a center-and-spread data summary as portfolio artifacts.
Unit 5 — Ratios, Integers, Equations & Data
Overview
This unit is the heart of the year’s numeracy work, building on Grade 5’s decimals, fractions, and coordinate grid. Learners use ratios and rates to describe and compare real situations such as fair shares, recipes, and unit prices, and use positive and negative numbers to represent real situations such as temperature and elevation, locating and ordering them on a number line. They use variables to write expressions and equations that represent real situations and solve one-step equations, represent the relationship between two quantities with a table and graph and tell when one quantity depends on the other, find the area, surface area, and volume of common figures and use nets to build and analyze three-dimensional shapes, and draw and use polygons on the coordinate plane. They recognize and describe statistical variability — the center, spread, and shape of a data set — and summarize a data set with mean, median, mode, and range, choosing the measure that best answers a question. Mathematics remains sense-making with real things, drawn from many traditions, for everyone.
Essential questions
- How do ratios, rates, and positive and negative numbers describe real situations?
