All of Me, All of Us
Objectives
- D01.S2.08.01 Explain how multiple and intersecting identities, such as culture, gender, ability, and language, shape a whole self.
- D01.S3.08.01 Manage impulses deliberately, choosing a response rather than reacting in emotionally charged moments.
- D01.S3.08.02 Explain the difference between short-term and long-term consequences and weigh them in a decision.
- D02.S3.08.02 Take part in strengthening belonging in their school or local community.
- D02.S4.08.01 Analyze how systems of care and mutual aid operate and what makes them fair or unfair.
- D02.S4.08.02 Distinguish charity from mutual aid and solidarity, and explain the difference.
Essential questions
- Who am I becoming, as multiple and intersecting identities shape a whole self, and what will I choose rather than react to as I look ahead?
- How do I strengthen belonging, understand systems of care, and act with solidarity rather than charity as I carry this year into high school?
Big ideas
- I am a whole made of intersecting identities, and deliberate choice — weighing short-term against long-term consequences — is how I carry myself forward.
- Belonging is something I strengthen, systems of care can be made fair, and solidarity, not charity, is how I stand with others.
Lessons
- 1 All of Me: The Whole Self Made of Intersecting Identities 55 minutes
- 2 What I Choose, Not What I React To: Impulse, Choice & Consequences 55 minutes
- 3 Belonging I Strengthen 50 minutes
- 4 Systems of Care and Solidarity (Not Charity) 55 minutes
- 5 All of Us: Celebration, the Caring Community & Looking Ahead 55 minutes
Assessment plan
A year-end portfolio and celebration of each learner's own work; an intersecting-identities "who I am becoming" reflection, a choice-and-consequences note, and a belonging-and-solidarity reflection as closing artifacts.
Unit 12 — All of Me, All of Us
Overview
This unit gathers the year together, building on Grade 7’s closing celebration. Learners reflect on how multiple and intersecting identities — culture, gender, ability, and language — shape the whole self they are becoming, and name how they will manage impulses deliberately, weighing short-term against long-term consequences as they look ahead. They take part in strengthening belonging in their school or local community, analyze how systems of care and mutual aid operate and what makes them fair or unfair, and distinguish charity from mutual aid and solidarity, choosing to stand with others rather than only to give from above. They celebrate each whole person, the caring community they have built, and the living Earth — and look ahead to Grade 9, where a coherent personal narrative, the ethics of technology and the environment, and reasoning across multiple ethical frameworks will carry the same questions into high school.
