Grade 5
Grade 5 is the year question and evidence learn to travel together, and number reaches into decimals, fractions, and the coordinate grid. Reading moves toward telling fact from opinion, reading an author's purpose, point of view, and structure, and carrying research from several sources into a short report in one's own words, while number moves into decimals to the thousandths, operations with fractions and decimals in real contexts, graphing relationships on a coordinate grid, and the volume of solid shapes. Science becomes a designed test: form a testable question, decide what stays the same and what changes, and separate evidence from inference from opinion — the habit the year opens with, in "How Do We Know?" The year still opens inward — with feelings and values, the growing story of the self, and the body in motion and growth — then gives the heart of the year to literacy and numeracy, before turning outward through science, the arts, health, and the wider human and living world, and closing in a celebration of self, community, and the living Earth. Emotional, physical, and contextual foundations stay strong, even as intellectual work carries the most weight.

start_day/end_day map the unit onto the 180-day school year; the list is a
continuous sequence from day 1 to day 180 with no gaps or overlaps. domain and
pillar name the primary domain(s) and pillar(s) each unit serves. domain_weighting
expresses the intended balance of instructional time across the ten domains, in
percent of the year. lesson_count counts the core lessons; the days between lessons
carry flex time, assessment, integration, and celebration. assessment_plan
describes how a child’s growth is seen and recorded at this level.
Year at a glance
The Grade 5 year is a spiral that deepens what Grade 4 began — and it opens with the question at the heart of every science: how do we know? The opening unit, How Do We Know?, establishes the year’s through-line. Where Grade 4 learned to measure with tools and compare repeated trials, Grade 5 now designs the test: learners form a testable question, plan an investigation, and identify what stays the same and what changes, and they learn to separate what they saw — evidence — from what they reason — inference — from what they merely think — opinion — in a hands-on investigation such as testing whether heavy things always sink. That one distinction will echo through the whole year: through reading, history, media, and the arts alike.
Then the year turns inward. My Feelings, My Values & My Growing Self builds on Grade 4’s feeling-intensity and complex feelings: now learners explain how thoughts, memories, and body sensations can shape a feeling, and compare how feelings are expressed in different families, cultures, and situations. They name the values they care about — fairness, honesty, kindness — and give an example of living by one, and explain how a person’s identity is shaped by family, culture, place, and history. They monitor their own behavior and feelings during a task and name what helped or hurt their focus, and take responsibility for a choice and its effects on others, naming a better next step. My Body, My Movement & My Growth then reads the body with new precision: the mind–body connection — how worry can make a stomach feel tight — and how bodies grow and change at different rates, every pace normal. Learners refine a specific motor skill through repeated practice and give a peer helpful feedback, and explain how regular movement benefits the heart, muscles, and mood.
Teams, Empathy & Belonging turns outward into the practice of care. Where Grade 4 learned to paraphrase and negotiate fairly, Grade 5 learns to give and receive feedback kindly and use it to improve shared work, and to cooperate in a team by dividing tasks fairly and following through on one’s part. They take the perspective of a person from a different culture or place and describe their daily life, and recognize when a first guess about someone’s feelings might be wrong — and check with them. They explain how communities are built through shared work, symbols, and stories, investigate how people in a community meet shared needs such as food, safety, and learning, describe examples of mutual aid from different cultures and times, and practice fairness by dividing resources so everyone has enough. The heart of the year is given to the two great tools of school, now working with real independence. Reading, Writing, Research & Many Languages builds fluency and comprehension: paraphrasing a speaker’s points accurately and asking clarifying questions when unsure, giving a short presentation with a clear main idea, supporting reasons, and a conclusion, explaining how an author uses structure — cause and effect, problem and solution — to organize ideas, and distinguishing fact from opinion and identifying the author’s purpose and point of view. They write for different purposes and audiences, choosing an appropriate style and structure, and gather information from several sources, note key facts, and write a short report in their own words. They recognize that many writing systems exist — alphabets and character scripts — and identify a few, and describe how language is tied to culture, such as words for family, food, or respect that differ across languages — always in the learner’s home language first, with multilingualism held as wealth. Decimals, Fractions, Shapes & Data grows from Grade 4’s place value to 1,000,000 into decimals and the coordinate plane: reading, writing, comparing, and rounding decimals to the thousandths and connecting them to fractions with denominators of 10 and 100, adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions and decimals in real contexts such as sharing, cooking, and money, plotting points and graphing relationships in the first quadrant of a coordinate grid, writing and evaluating simple expressions, graphing points and using them to solve problems about location and distance, finding the volume of right rectangular prisms with unit cubes and formulas, converting among standard measurement units, and representing and interpreting data on line plots with fractions — mathematics as sense-making with real things, drawn from many traditions, for everyone.
From there the year looks out at the world. Food Webs, Forces, Earth & Sky deepens the science the year opened with: explaining how matter and energy move through a food web and what can happen when one part changes, describing how traits pass from parents to offspring and how some traits vary within a family, explaining that matter is made of particles too small to see and using the idea to explain changes of state, describing gravity and magnetism as forces that act at a distance, describing the Earth–Moon–Sun system and explaining day length, moon phases, and eclipses, and explaining how Earth’s surface is changed by slow and fast processes, and where earthquakes and volcanoes occur. Making, Music & Movement gives craft to the imagination — planning and completing an artwork with a clear idea, composing a short piece with a clear beginning, middle, and end, choreographing a short group dance or scene, and designing and building something that solves a real problem — while meeting the arts of other cultures as living traditions to honor with respectful questions, citing what they observe and hear, never as specimens. Healthy, Safe & Strong returns to the body with growing independence — how nutrients such as carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals, and water support different parts of the body, how having too little or too much of certain foods affects the body over time without judging any body, how to respond in an emergency and what information to give, and the idea of consent for one’s own body and respect for the boundaries of others.
The final third steps into the wider human story. People, Cultures & Long Ago builds a timeline that compares two cultures or civilizations and identifies what changed and what stayed the same in each, explains how a tool or technology — writing, the wheel, the plow — changed how people lived and worked, compares origin stories from two or more peoples and explains how each reflects the people who tell it, describes an achievement in art, building, or learning from a non-European civilization, traces the migration of a specific people and the push and pull reasons for their movement, explains how trade and travel connected peoples across land and sea and what moved with them, describes a historical example of people treated unfairly who resisted or helped one another, and explains what fairness and dignity mean using a concrete example of when they were honored or denied — history told as a global story from many perspectives, never one people’s triumph. Rights, Fairness & Shared Decisions explains how a person’s values can shape their choices, compares two possible choices and their consequences for others before deciding, explains what a right is, where some rights come from — such as the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child — and why they apply to all children, compares how fairness was or was not honored in a historical or story example and who benefited, explains what government is and what it does and compares how decisions are made in more than one country, plans and carries out a small collective action for the common good and reflects on what made it work, helps two peers solve a simple conflict by having each side listen and find a fair solution, and explains the difference between conflict and violence — and why disagreements can be healthy when handled well. Tools, Media & Our Earth Home closes the year by gathering everything together: explaining how a technology people use every day has changed daily life over time, comparing how people in two different places use a similar technology differently, evaluating whether a claim is likely true by checking more than one source, recognizing when a message favors one side and what fair reporting would include, tracing the path of energy or matter through a cycle or food web, explaining how living things in an ecosystem depend on one another and what can happen when one part changes, describing a form of pollution or habitat loss and something people can do to reduce it, and explaining what it means to use a resource carefully so it lasts — then celebrating each whole person, the caring community, and the living Earth, and looking ahead to Grade 6.
Throughout, the four pillars are interwoven. Intellectual awareness (P3) carries the most weight — fact-and-opinion reading, research writing, decimals and fractions, and designed, controlled tests are the year’s central work — but emotional and social awareness (P1) and physical and somatic awareness (P2) remain strong, for a known, cared-for, and capable body-and-self is still the ground all formal learning stands on. Contextual and ecological awareness (P4) keeps growing: history moves toward comparing civilizations and tracing migration, civics toward rights, government, and collective action, and ecology toward food webs, cycles, pollution, and stewardship. No high-stakes tests anywhere: a child’s growth is seen through reading aloud, writing, number work with real things, designed fair tests, and a portfolio of what they make, say, and do.
