Tools, Media & Our Earth Home
Objectives
- D10.S1.05.01 Explain how a technology people use every day, such as a phone or a water pump, has changed daily life over time.
- D10.S1.05.02 Compare how people in two different places in the world use a similar technology differently, and suggest why.
- D10.S2.05.01 Evaluate whether a claim is likely true by checking more than one source and noting where they agree or disagree.
- D10.S2.05.02 Recognize when a message favors one side, and explain what fair reporting would include.
- D10.S3.05.01 Trace the path of energy or matter, such as water, through a simple cycle or food web, and explain why it cycles.
- D10.S3.05.02 Explain how living things in an ecosystem depend on one another and what can happen when one part changes.
- D10.S4.05.01 Describe a form of pollution or habitat loss and one thing people can do to reduce it.
- D10.S4.05.02 Explain what it means to use a resource carefully so it lasts, and give one example from their own life.
Essential questions
- How do tools and media change our lives, and how do I read them critically?
- How does matter and energy cycle through the living world, and how do I care for it?
Big ideas
- Technologies change daily life and are used differently in different places; claims must be checked across sources, and fair reporting includes all sides.
- Matter and energy cycle through ecosystems, living things depend on one another, and caring for resources and reducing harm is stewardship.

Assessment plan
Observation of technology comparisons, claim-checking, and cycle reasoning; a claim-check note, a fair-reporting note, a cycle diagram, and a stewardship reflection as portfolio artifacts, gathered in a year-end celebration.
Unit 12 — Tools, Media & Our Earth Home
Overview
This unit closes the year by gathering everything together, building on Grade 4’s idea of design, its ecosystems, and reduce-reuse-recycle. Learners explain how a technology people use every day, such as a phone or a water pump, has changed daily life over time, and compare how people in two different places in the world use a similar technology differently. They evaluate whether a claim is likely true by checking more than one source and noting where they agree or disagree, and recognize when a message favors one side and what fair reporting would include. They trace the path of energy or matter, such as water, through a simple cycle or food web, and explain how living things in an ecosystem depend on one another and what can happen when one part changes. They describe a form of pollution or habitat loss and something people can do to reduce it, and explain what it means to use a resource carefully so it lasts. The unit ends in a celebration of each whole person, the caring community, and the living Earth — and looks ahead to Grade 6.
Essential questions
