Unit 5 — Reading, Writing, Research & Many Languages
Overview
This unit is the heart of the year’s literacy work, building on Grade 4’s fluency, comprehension, and the plan–draft–revise–edit–publish process. Learners paraphrase a speaker’s points accurately and ask clarifying questions when unsure, and give a short presentation with a clear main idea, supporting reasons, and a conclusion. They explain how an author uses structure, such as cause and effect or problem and solution, to organize ideas, and distinguish fact from opinion and identify the author’s purpose and point of view. They write for different purposes and audiences, choosing an appropriate style and structure, and gather information from several sources, note key facts, and write a short report in their own words. They recognize that many writing systems exist, such as alphabets and character scripts, and identify a few, and describe how language is tied to culture, such as words for family, food, or respect that differ across languages. Home language is honored first, and multilingualism is treated as wealth.
Essential questions
- How do I understand, evaluate, and share what I read and hear?
- How do I research, write for a purpose, and honor the many languages people speak?
