Unit 6 — Decimals, Fractions, Shapes & Data

Overview

This unit is the heart of the year’s numeracy work, building on Grade 4’s place value to 1,000,000 and multi-digit operations. Learners read, write, compare, and round decimals to the thousandths and connect them to fractions with denominators of 10 and 100, and add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions and decimals in real contexts such as sharing, cooking, and money. They plot points and graph relationships in the first quadrant of a coordinate grid, write and evaluate simple expressions and interpret what they mean, graph points and use them to solve problems about location and distance, find the volume of right rectangular prisms using unit cubes and formulas, convert among different-sized standard measurement units, and represent and interpret data on line plots with fractions. Mathematics is sense-making with real things, drawn from many traditions, for everyone.
