Unit 11 — Rights, Fairness & Shared Decisions

Overview

This unit turns to how people think about right and wrong and decide and live together, building on Grade 4’s weighing of reasons, dignity, and rules. Learners explain how a person’s values can shape their choices, using a story or example, and compare two possible choices and their consequences for others before deciding. They explain what a right is, where some rights come from — such as the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child — and why they apply to all children, and compare how fairness was or was not honored in a historical or story example and who benefited. They explain what government is and what it does, and compare how decisions are made in more than one country. They plan and carry out a small collective action for the common good and reflect on what made it work, help two peers solve a simple conflict by having each side listen and find a fair solution, and explain the difference between conflict and violence — and why disagreements can be healthy when handled well. Questions are held as questions, not answered as dogma.

Essential questions

  • How do my values shape my choices and my care for what is fair?
  • How do rights, government, and collective action help us decide and live together?
