Unit 7 — Food Webs, Forces, Earth & Sky

Overview

This unit deepens the science the year opened with, building on Grade 4’s controlled experiments and the living world. Learners explain how matter and energy move through a food web and what can happen when one part changes, and describe how traits pass from parents to offspring and how some traits vary within a family. They explain that matter is made of particles too small to see and use this idea to explain changes of state, and describe gravity and magnetism as forces that act at a distance. They describe the Earth, Moon, and Sun system and explain day length, moon phases, and eclipses, and explain how Earth’s surface is changed by slow and fast processes, and where earthquakes and volcanoes occur. Throughout, the “how do we know” through-line holds: predict, test, observe, and separate evidence from inference.

Essential questions

  • How does matter and energy move through the living world?
  • What forces and changes shape matter, Earth, and the sky?
