Making, Composing, Devising & Designing
Objectives
- D07.S1.08.01 Create a series of artworks exploring one theme or idea, reflecting on how the work changes across the series.
- D07.S1.08.02 Critique an artwork using evidence about its elements, context, and purpose, distinguishing observation from judgment.
- D07.S2.08.01 Compose a piece in a chosen style or tradition and reflect on the choices that shaped it.
- D07.S2.08.02 Critique a musical work using evidence about its elements, context, and effect, separating observation from judgment.
- D07.S3.08.01 Choreograph or devise a piece exploring one theme, and reflect on how the work changed through rehearsal.
- D07.S3.08.02 Critique a performance using evidence about its movement, expression, context, and purpose, separating observation from judgment.
- D07.S4.08.01 Design and make a working prototype that solves a defined problem, and revise it through testing and feedback.
- D07.S4.08.02 Critique a design using evidence about its function, materials, fairness, and environmental footprint.
Essential questions
- How do I create a series of artworks on one theme and critique art, music, and performance with evidence rather than mere taste?
- How do I compose, devise, and make a working prototype — and revise each through feedback and testing?
Big ideas
- A body of work on one theme shows how an idea changes over time, and critique uses evidence about elements, context, and purpose — separating observation from judgment.
- Composing, devising, and prototyping are cycles of making and revising, and critique weighs function, materials, fairness, and footprint.

- 5 Critiquing a Musical Work: Elements, Context, Effect 55 minutes
- 6 Devising a Piece: One Theme, Made Through Rehearsal 55 minutes
- 7 Critiquing a Performance: Movement, Expression, Context, Purpose 55 minutes

- 10 Capstone: The Series, the Piece, the Performance, the Prototype 55 minutes
Assessment plan
A themed artwork series with a reflection on its change, a composed piece with a choices reflection, a devised performance with a rehearsal reflection, and a working prototype with a testing log; paired evidence-based critiques of an artwork, a musical work, a performance, and a design as portfolio artifacts.
Unit 7 — Making, Composing, Devising & Designing
Overview
This unit gives craft to the imagination at the moment formal reasoning emerges fully, building on Grade 7’s making, performing, and designing with feedback. Learners create a series of artworks exploring one theme or idea, reflecting on how the work changes across the series, and critique an artwork using evidence about its elements, context, and purpose, distinguishing observation from judgment. They compose a piece in a chosen style or tradition and reflect on the choices that shaped it, and critique a musical work using evidence about its elements, context, and effect. They choreograph or devise a piece exploring one theme and reflect on how the work changed through rehearsal, and critique a performance using evidence about its movement, expression, context, and purpose. They design and make a working prototype that solves a defined problem and revise it through testing and feedback, and critique a design using evidence about its function, materials, fairness, and environmental footprint. The arts of other cultures are met as living traditions to honor with respectful questions, never as specimens.
