Unit 6 — Wondering & Testing: The Living World

Overview

This unit turns wonder into prediction and test, building on Grade 1’s five-senses observation and Kindergarten’s “why?” questions. Learners make a prediction, test it by doing, and tell whether the result matched; sort and group objects by features; describe the life cycle of a plant or animal in order; observe and describe a habitat; sort materials by properties and explain how those properties make them useful; notice that sound, light, and heat are forms of energy; describe how the Sun warms the Earth and gives light; and describe rocks, soil, and water as the land we live on. Questions are held as questions, and evidence is distinguished from belief.

Essential questions

  • How do I predict, test, and see whether my guess was right?
  • What do living things need, and how do the Sun and the land help them?
