Overview
This unit deepens ethics and civic life, building on Grade 3’s weighing of reasons and repairing harm. Learners weigh two reasons for a choice and decide which is stronger and why, and describe what a value is and name one of their own values. They explain what dignity means and give an example of it being honored or denied, evaluate whether a rule or practice is fair to everyone it affects, describe how people make decisions and choose leaders in their community and compare with one other place in the world, work with classmates on a small shared project dividing tasks fairly and listening to each person, practice active listening and “I” statements to solve a disagreement fairly, and describe restorative practice — listening, taking responsibility, and repairing harm — and why it can work better than punishment alone. Questions are held as questions, not answered as dogma.
