Feelings, Identity & Purpose
Objectives
- D01.S1.07.01 Describe mixed or conflicting feelings, such as happy and sad at once, in precise language.
- D01.S1.07.02 Explain how cultural norms shape which feelings are shown, hidden, or valued.
- D01.S2.07.01 Reflect on how their identity has changed over time and predict ways it may keep growing.
- D01.S2.07.02 Recognize stereotypes and labels and explain how they can limit a person's sense of self.
- D01.S3.07.01 Reflect on a past decision and its consequences to make a better choice next time.
- D01.S3.07.02 Build and follow a personal routine, such as study, sleep, or movement, that supports their own goals.
Essential questions
- How do I hold mixed and conflicting feelings at once, and how do cultural norms shape what I show, hide, or value?
- Who am I as my identity changes over time, and how do stereotypes and labels try to narrow it?
- What does it mean to author my own life — to learn from a past decision and build a routine that serves my goals?
Big ideas
- Feelings can be mixed and conflicting, and cultures differ in which feelings they show, hide, or value — both can be true at once.
- Identity is a changing story, and stereotypes and labels are shortcuts that can limit a person's sense of self.
- Reflection on past decisions and a steady personal routine are how I turn my values into purpose and my goals into action.

Observation of precise naming of mixed and conflicting feelings and of cultural norms around emotion; a "my changing identity" reflection, a stereotype-and-label analysis, a decision-reflection note, and a personal routine built and followed as portfolio artifacts.
Unit 1 — Feelings, Identity & Purpose
Overview
This unit opens the year inward, building on Grade 6’s work of identifying patterns in one’s own emotional responses and reading the feeling behind a behavior. Learners now hold contradiction at once: they describe mixed or conflicting feelings — happy and sad at once — in precise language, and explain how cultural norms shape which feelings are shown, hidden, or valued. They reflect on how their identity has changed over time and predict the ways it may keep growing, and recognize stereotypes and labels and explain how these can limit a person’s sense of self. They reflect on a past decision and its consequences to make a better choice next time, and build and follow a personal routine — study, sleep, movement — that supports their own goals. Identity formation now runs in earnest, so every self is honored as a changing work in progress, never a verdict.
