My Body, Wellness & Movement
Objectives
- D03.S1.09.01 Explain the somatic basis of emotion and thought, using an example of how body state shapes mood and thinking.
- D03.S1.09.02 Evaluate body-image messages from media and peers and articulate a body-positive or body-neutral view of their own body.
- D03.S2.09.01 Set a personal movement or fitness goal and track progress toward it over time.
- D03.S2.09.02 Analyze how movement affects mental health and learning, describing the basic mechanism such as endorphins and focus.
- D03.S3.09.01 Analyze a local food system from farm to table to waste and its effects on health, workers, and the environment.
- D03.S3.09.02 Explain how hunger, food security, and unequal access to healthy food affect health outcomes around the world.
Essential questions
- How does my body state shape my mood and thinking, and how do I hold a body-positive or body-neutral view against media's messages?
- How do I set and track a movement goal, and how does movement shape my mental health and learning?
- How does the food system work from farm to table to waste, and who does it nourish, harm, and leave out?
Big ideas
- Emotion and thought have a somatic basis, and a body-positive or body-neutral view is steadier than one borrowed from media and peers.
- Movement supports mental health and learning, and a personal movement goal tracked over time builds ownership of my own wellbeing.
- Food systems link farms, tables, and waste to health, workers, and the environment, and hunger and unequal access shape health worldwide.

Assessment plan
Observation of a learner explaining how body state shapes mood and thinking and articulating a body-positive or body-neutral view; a tracked movement goal with a mental-health reflection, and a farm-to-table-to-waste food-system analysis with a food-security reflection as portfolio artifacts.
Unit 4 — My Body, Wellness & Movement
Overview
This unit reads the body as the somatic ground of thought and feeling, building on Grade 8’s reading of the nervous system and stress. Learners explain the somatic basis of emotion and thought, showing how body state shapes mood and thinking, and evaluate body-image messages from media and peers to articulate a body-positive or body-neutral view of their own body. They set a personal movement or fitness goal and track progress over time, analyze how movement affects mental health and learning, analyze a local food system from farm to table to waste and its effects on health, workers, and the environment, and explain how hunger, food security, and unequal access to healthy food shape health outcomes around the world. The body is taught with dignity and joy, honoring the wide range of bodies and abilities.
