Creative & Aesthetic Expression
Objectives
- D07.S1.09.01 Create a digital or mixed-media artwork that combines techniques and reflect on the choices technology made possible.
- D07.S1.09.02 Analyze how visual media such as advertising, news, and social media uses composition and symbolism to influence viewers.
- D07.S2.09.01 Create music using digital or recording tools and reflect on how the technology shaped the sound and the process.
- D07.S2.09.02 Analyze how music can build identity, community, or resistance, using examples from more than one culture.
- D07.S3.09.01 Create a performance that uses the moving body to explore identity or a personal question, and reflect on the process.
- D07.S3.09.02 Analyze how dance, drama, and ritual build community or carry memory across cultures.
- D07.S4.09.01 Use digital or fabrication tools to design and make an object, and reflect on how the tools changed what was possible.
- D07.S4.09.02 Analyze how technology and design shape everyday life and the environment, using examples from more than one context.
Essential questions
- How do I make digital and mixed-media art, and how do advertising, news, and social media use composition and symbolism to influence viewers?
- How do I create music with digital tools, and how can music build identity, community, or resistance across cultures?
- How do I use the moving body and the maker's hand to explore identity and to shape everyday life and the environment?
Big ideas
- Digital and mixed-media tools open new choices in art, and the composition and symbolism of media can be read critically and used deliberately.
- Music, dance, drama, and ritual build identity, community, memory, and resistance across cultures.
- Making with digital or fabrication tools shapes what is possible, and design shapes everyday life and the environment across contexts.

Assessment plan
A digital or mixed-media artwork with a reflection on technological choices, a visual-media influence analysis, a digitally created piece of music with a process reflection, a music-and-resistance analysis, a performed identity piece with a process reflection, a ritual-and-memory analysis, a digitally fabricated object with a reflection, and a design-and-environment analysis as portfolio artifacts.
Unit 9 — Creative & Aesthetic Expression
Overview
This unit gives craft and a critical eye to the imagination, building on Grade 8’s series of artworks, compositions, devised pieces, and prototypes toward work made with and about technology. Learners create a digital or mixed-media artwork that combines techniques and reflect on the choices technology made possible, and analyze how visual media such as advertising, news, and social media use composition and symbolism to influence viewers. They create music using digital or recording tools and reflect on how the technology shaped the sound and the process, and analyze how music can build identity, community, or resistance across more than one culture. They create a performance that uses the moving body to explore identity or a personal question, analyze how dance, drama, and ritual build community or carry memory across cultures, use digital or fabrication tools to design and make an object and reflect on how the tools changed what was possible, and analyze how technology and design shape everyday life and the environment. The arts of other cultures are met as living traditions to honor with respectful questions, never as specimens.
