Making, Music & Movement
Objectives
- D07.S1.03.01 Use a simple pattern or repetition of shape, line, or color in an artwork.
- D07.S1.03.02 Describe the mood of an artwork and point to what in the picture creates it.
- D07.S2.03.01 Create a short rhythm pattern using long and short sounds and perform it.
- D07.S2.03.02 Describe how changing tempo, dynamics, or pitch changes the feeling of a song.
- D07.S3.03.01 Perform a short dance or movement piece that uses high and low levels, speeds, and shapes.
- D07.S3.03.02 Retell a story or feeling using only movement and gesture, and explain their choices.
- D07.S4.03.01 Follow a simple design process of imagine, plan, make, and improve to build something that meets a need.
- D07.S4.03.02 Explain how the materials available shape what can be made, using an example from their own making.
Essential questions
- How do I use pattern, sound, and movement to express an idea or feeling?
- How does a design process help me make something that works?
Big ideas
- Art, music, and movement are languages of pattern and feeling.
- A design process — imagine, plan, make, improve — turns an idea into something real.

A patterned artwork, a performed rhythm pattern, and a movement-only retelling as portfolio artifacts; observation of the imagine-plan-make-improve design process.
Unit 7 — Making, Music & Movement
Overview
This unit gives the whole body and the imagination to making, building on Grade 2’s color mixing, rhythm patterns, and movement sequences. Learners use a simple pattern or repetition of shape, line, or color in an artwork and describe the mood of an artwork and what in the picture creates it; create and perform a short rhythm pattern using long and short sounds and describe how changing tempo, dynamics, or pitch changes a song’s feeling; perform a short dance or movement piece that uses high and low levels, speeds, and shapes, and retell a story or feeling using only movement and gesture while explaining their choices; and follow a simple design process of imagine, plan, make, and improve to build something that meets a need, explaining how the materials available shape what can be made. Every culture’s arts are treated as a living heritage, not a museum piece.
Essential questions
- How do I use pattern, sound, and movement to express an idea or feeling?
