Unit 11 — Tools, Media & Our Earth Home

Overview

This unit meets the tools, media, and living Earth we are stewards of, building on Grade 2’s tools-that-solve-problems, telling information from selling, and caring for places. Learners name a simple machine, such as a lever, wheel, or ramp, and tell how it makes a job easier; describe how one tool or machine changed the way a job was done long ago compared with today; tell the difference between an advertisement and information and give one clue that something is an ad; explain that a message has a purpose and an audience and name both for a simple message; build or draw a simple food chain with a plant and an animal and show the direction energy moves; explain that green plants make their own food using sunlight and that all living things depend on plants or on animals that eat them; tell the difference between a natural resource that can run out and one that comes back; and name one resource people use every day, where it comes from, and one way to use less of it. Technology is taught with critical judgment, neither worship nor fear.

Essential questions

  • How do tools and media work, and how can I tell what a message is for?
  • How does energy move through living things, and how do we care for Earth’s resources?
