Observation of a learner decoding tone and digital messages, facilitating a group conflict, and analyzing a conflict from multiple perspectives; a bias-and-stereotype log, a power-and-resources "who is left out" analysis, a belonging-strengthening action, and a charity-versus-mutual-aid comparison as portfolio artifacts.

Unit 3 — Relationships, Empathy & Conflict

Overview

This unit turns outward into the practice of care, building on Grade 7’s work of setting and respecting boundaries and repairing relationships. Learners now facilitate: they analyze how tone, body language, and digital messages can change meaning in communication, and manage conflict in a group by facilitating discussion and seeking a solution all can accept. They analyze a conflict from multiple perspectives, including ones they disagree with, and recognize bias and stereotypes that can block empathy and question them. They analyze how power and resources are shared within a community and who is left out, take part in strengthening belonging in their school or local community, analyze how systems of care and mutual aid operate and what makes them fair or unfair, and distinguish charity from mutual aid and solidarity, explaining the difference.

Essential questions

  • How do tone, body language, and digital messages change meaning, and how do I facilitate conflict toward a solution all can accept?
  • How do I see a conflict from every side, question the bias and stereotype that block empathy, and notice who is left out when power and resources are shared?
  • What is the difference between charity and mutual aid and solidarity, and how do I strengthen belonging in my community?
