Unit 4 — Reading, Writing & Many Languages

Overview

This unit continues formal literacy, building on Grade 1’s decoding and simple sentences. Learners listen to a partner and retell in order, take turns in conversation and stay on topic, read common sight words and regularly spelled words accurately and with growing fluency, answer who, what, where, when, and why questions about a text, write a short narrative with first, next, and last, write a simple informative or opinion piece with a reason, share something about their home language and culture, and recognize that people speak many languages and none is better than another. The home language is honored first and multilingualism is treated as wealth.

Essential questions

  • How do I read with growing ease and understand what I read?
  • How do I share my ideas in writing, in my own language and others’?
