Observation of timeline and map work; a dated timeline comparing two places, a knowledge-tradition description, and a map-and-settlement note as portfolio artifacts.

Unit 9 — People, Places & Long Ago

Overview

This unit steps into the wider human story, building on Grade 3’s timelines of local events. Learners use a timeline with dates to sequence events from two different places and compare what was happening at the same time, and compare daily life in an earlier society with life today, identifying one thing that changed and one that stayed the same. They describe a knowledge tradition of a specific people — such as herbal medicine, star navigation, or oral history — and how it is kept and passed on, compare how two cultures explain the same natural event through story and observation, use maps to locate major landforms and bodies of water and explain how they shaped where and how people lived, explain how the environment affects how people get food, water, and shelter and how people change it, explain how rules and leaders make decisions and what people can do when a decision is unfair, and describe a peaceful way people have resisted unfair treatment. History is told as a global story from many perspectives, never one people’s triumph.

Essential questions

  • How do timelines and maps help us understand change and place?
  • How have different peoples lived, known, and resisted — and what can we learn from them?
