Observation of a learner separating event, thought, and feeling in a real reaction and naming how emotion helped or skewed their judgment; an intersecting-identities self-map, an inner-worth-versus-outside-approval analysis, an impulse-management journal entry, and a short-term-versus-long-term consequences decision note as portfolio artifacts.

Unit 1 — Feelings, Identity & Purpose

Overview

This unit opens the year inward, building on Grade 7’s precise naming of mixed and conflicting feelings and its reading of cultural norms around emotion. Learners now analyze: they separate a strong emotional reaction into the event, the thought, and the feeling, and explain how emotion can both inform and distort judgment, using a personal example. They explain how multiple and intersecting identities — culture, gender, ability, and language — shape a whole self, and analyze where self-esteem comes from, distinguishing inner worth from outside approval. They manage impulses deliberately, choosing a response rather than reacting in emotionally charged moments, and explain the difference between short-term and long-term consequences and weigh them in a decision. Identity formation now runs at full strength, so every self is honored as a whole made of many intersecting parts, never a single label.

Essential questions

  • How do I separate the event, the thought, and the feeling in a strong emotional reaction, and how can emotion both inform and distort my judgment?
  • Who am I as multiple and intersecting identities shape a whole self, and where does my sense of worth truly come from?
  • What does it mean to choose my response rather than react, and to weigh short-term against long-term consequences?
