Unit 3 — Feelings, Identity & Purpose

Overview

This unit opens the year inward, building on Grade 8’s separation of event, thought, and feeling and its analysis of multiple, intersecting identities. Learners now consolidate identity, values, and purpose: they use a broad emotional vocabulary to articulate subtle and secondary emotions in complex social situations, and analyze how emotions are shaped by social context, media, and group belonging. They construct a coherent personal narrative connecting past, present, and hoped-for future, analyze how a person’s identity is shaped by society and in turn shapes their choices, set a longer-term goal with a realistic plan and milestones, and advocate for their own needs and boundaries while considering others. Every self is honored as a whole in the making, never a label, and every question is held as a question.

Essential questions

  • How do I name the subtle and secondary emotions of complex situations, and how are my emotions shaped by social context, media, and belonging?
  • What coherent story links my past, present, and hoped-for future, and how does my society shape who I am while I also shape it?
  • How do I set a longer-term goal with a realistic plan, and advocate for my own needs while honoring others?
