Observation of counting, sorting, and pattern work with real objects; sorting and shape-hunt work as portfolio artifacts.

Unit 6 — Counting, Shapes & Patterns

Overview

This unit teaches mathematics as sense-making, not gatekeeping. Children count real things up to twenty, continue and copy simple repeating patterns, name and match common shapes with position words, and sort objects by one feature to compare groups. Before they ever meet an abstract symbol, they meet number, pattern, and shape in the sandbox, the garden, and the circle.

Essential questions

  • How do we count, compare, and sort the things around us?
  • Where do we find patterns and shapes in our world?
