Observation of a learner articulating the emotional climate of a group or society and how collective emotions arise; a written reflection on their emotional development naming strengths and areas of growth; a developing values-and-purpose statement; a place-in-the-global-world reflection on what they owe to people unlike themselves; a values-aligned decision log from a pressured or uncertain moment; and a self-directed personal project with evidence of follow-through, gathered as portfolio artifacts.

Unit 1 — Feelings, Identity & Purpose

Overview

This unit opens the year inward, building on Grade 10’s examined-and-defended identity. Learners now articulate and commit to it: they articulate the emotional climate of a group or society and how collective emotions such as hope, fear, and grief arise, and reflect on their own emotional development over time, naming areas of strength and growth. They articulate their developing values, purpose, and sense of what a meaningful life looks like, and reflect on their place in a global, interconnected world and what they owe to people unlike themselves. They make decisions that align their actions with their values even under pressure or uncertainty, and take authorship of a personal project or commitment, seeing it through with self-direction. Every self is honored as a whole in the making, never a label, and every question is held as a question.

Facilitation notes

All lessons are written in plain, concrete language and are designed to be teachable with paper, a voice, and found objects (no device or internet required); digital options appear only as an optional enriched tier. Because the curriculum travels across languages, facilitators are encouraged to translate instructions and key vocabulary on the fly, and to accept responses in the learner’s strongest language — a thought expressed in one’s first language is a complete answer.

Essential questions

  • How do collective emotions such as hope, fear, and grief arise in a group or society, and how do I read and shape that climate?
  • What are my developing values, purpose, and sense of a meaningful life, and what do I owe to people unlike myself in a global world?
  • How do I make decisions that align my actions with my values under pressure, and see a personal commitment through with self-direction?
