Numbers All Around Us
Objectives
- D05.S1.01.01 Count, read, and write whole numbers up to 120 and use them to say how many objects are in a group.
- D05.S1.01.02 Add and subtract within 20 using objects, drawings, or counting strategies, and explain what the operation means.
- D05.S2.01.01 Identify, extend, and create repeating patterns using objects, sounds, or colors, and tell the rule of the pattern.
- D05.S2.01.02 Find the missing number in a simple number sentence such as 3 + ? = 7 and explain how they know.
- D05.S3.01.01 Compose and take apart two- and three-dimensional shapes and describe their sides, corners, and faces.
- D05.S3.01.02 Measure and compare lengths using non-standard units such as hand spans or paper clips.
- D05.S4.01.01 Collect and organize data into a simple chart or picture graph and answer questions about what it shows.
- D05.S4.01.02 Tell and write time and identify the value of coins, using them in simple real situations such as buying a snack.
Essential questions
- How do numbers help me count, compare, and solve problems in the world?
- Where do I find patterns and shapes in the things around me?
Big ideas
- Numbers, patterns, and shapes are ways to see structure in the world.
- I can add, subtract, measure, and make sense of data to answer real questions.

Assessment plan
Number work with real objects, a written number check-in, and a shape/measure task; a picture graph and a "buying a snack" money role-play as portfolio artifacts.
Unit 5 — Numbers All Around Us
Overview
This unit begins formal numeracy. Learners count, read, and write whole numbers to 120 and use them to say how many; add and subtract within 20 using objects, drawings, and counting strategies; identify, extend, and create repeating patterns and find a missing number in a simple number sentence; compose and take apart two- and three-dimensional shapes; measure and compare with non-standard units; and collect, organize, and answer questions about simple data, telling time and using coins in real situations. Mathematics is taught as sense-making with real things — counting, pattern, and shape drawn from many traditions, for everyone.
Essential questions
- How do numbers help me count, compare, and solve problems in the world?
- Where do I find patterns and shapes in the things around me?
