Unit 4 — Reading, Writing & Many Languages
Overview
This unit continues formal literacy, building on Grade 2’s fluency, retelling, and first short pieces of writing. Learners read grade-level texts with accuracy and fluency, self-correcting when meaning breaks down; identify the main idea and supporting details of a short informational or narrative text; retell a spoken story or explanation in sequence with key details; ask and answer questions to understand a speaker’s meaning and explain one idea to a small group; write a paragraph with a topic sentence, at least two supporting details, and a closing sentence; revise and edit their own writing for spelling, punctuation, and clarity; learn and use simple everyday phrases in another language; and notice that the same idea can be said in many languages. The learner’s home language is honored first, and multilingualism is treated as wealth, not deficit.
