Feelings, Identity & Purpose
Objectives
- D01.S1.12.01 Integrate emotional understanding into ethical judgment, recognizing how emotion informs and can bias moral reasoning.
- D01.S1.12.02 Respond to complex, emotionally charged personal and global situations with insight, care, and emotional wisdom.
- D01.S2.12.01 Articulate an integrated sense of who they are, what they value, and how they will act, holding together across contexts.
- D01.S2.12.02 Explain how they author their identity within global, cultural, and technological forces rather than being defined by them.
- D01.S3.12.01 Exercise self-directed agency by setting, planning, and acting on a meaningful life goal with autonomy and accountability.
- D01.S3.12.02 Sustain self-regulation and purpose through setbacks and systemic constraints, naming what sustains them.
Essential questions
- How does emotion inform and bias moral reasoning, and how do I respond to emotionally charged personal and global situations with insight and care?
- Who am I — across contexts and within global, cultural, and technological forces — and how do I author, rather than merely inherit, my identity?
- How do I set and act on a meaningful life goal with autonomy and accountability, and what sustains my purpose through setbacks and systemic constraints?
Big ideas
- Emotional understanding is woven into ethical judgment: emotion informs moral reasoning and can also bias it, and emotional wisdom means responding with insight and care, not mere reaction.
- An integrated self holds together across contexts — who I am, what I value, and how I will act — and is authored, not merely inherited, within global, cultural, and technological forces.
- Self-directed agency means setting, planning, and acting on a meaningful life goal with autonomy and accountability, and sustaining purpose through setbacks and systemic constraints by naming what sustains me.

Assessment plan
Observation of a learner integrating emotional understanding into ethical judgment and responding to an emotionally charged situation with insight and care; a written integrated self-and-values statement held across contexts; a reflection on authoring identity within global, cultural, and technological forces; a self-directed life-goal plan with autonomy and accountability; and a "what sustains me through setbacks" reflection, gathered as capstone portfolio artifacts.
Unit 1 — Feelings, Identity & Purpose
Overview
This unit opens the capstone year inward, building on Grade 11’s articulated-and- committed purpose. Learners now integrate their feelings, identity, and purpose into a single, stable sense of who they are. They integrate emotional understanding into ethical judgment, recognizing how emotion informs and can bias moral reasoning, and respond to complex, emotionally charged personal and global situations with insight, care, and emotional wisdom. They articulate an integrated sense of who they are, what they value, and how they will act, held together across contexts, and explain how they author their identity within global, cultural, and technological forces rather than being defined by them. They exercise self-directed agency by setting, planning, and acting on a meaningful life goal with autonomy and accountability, and sustain self-regulation and purpose through setbacks and systemic constraints, naming what sustains them. Every self is honored as a whole in the making, never a label, and every question is held as a question.
