Number and place-value work with real objects, a written number check-in, and a shape/measure task; a bar graph and a "sharing into halves" task as portfolio artifacts.

Unit 5 — Numbers, Shapes, Patterns & Data

Overview

This unit continues formal numeracy, building on Grade 1’s counting to 120 and adding and subtracting within 20. Learners use place value of tens and ones to read, write, compare, and order two-digit numbers; add and subtract within 100 using models, drawings, or written methods; identify and extend growing patterns; solve one-step addition and subtraction problems with a missing number in a real context; identify and draw shapes with given attributes; partition circles and rectangles into halves, thirds, and fourths; measure with standard units such as centimeters, meters, and inches; and draw and interpret picture and bar graphs. Mathematics is taught as sense-making with real things, drawn from many traditions, for everyone.

Essential questions

  • How do tens and ones help me understand numbers up to 100?
  • How do I use numbers, shapes, patterns, and data to answer real questions?
