Numbers, Shapes, Patterns & Data
Objectives
- D05.S1.03.01 Use place value to 1,000 to read, write, round, and compare whole numbers.
- D05.S1.03.02 Multiply and divide within 100 and explain the meaning of each operation using objects, drawings, and known facts.
- D05.S2.03.01 Identify arithmetic patterns in tables and number grids and explain them using the properties of operations.
- D05.S2.03.02 Solve two-step word problems using the four operations and explain the relationship between addition and subtraction or multiplication and division.
- D05.S3.03.01 Understand the area and perimeter of rectangles and solve problems using them in real contexts.
- D05.S3.03.02 Sort shapes into categories by their attributes and recognize that shapes in a category share common properties.
- D05.S4.03.01 Measure and estimate liquid volume and mass using standard units and solve real problems with them.
- D05.S4.03.02 Draw scaled picture and bar graphs and use them to solve problems and make comparisons.
Essential questions
- How do multiplication and division help me understand equal groups?
- How do I measure, shape, and read data to answer real questions?
Big ideas
- Place value to 1,000 and multiplication and division open up new kinds of number work.
- Area, perimeter, measurement, and scaled graphs are ways to see and share structure in the world.

Assessment plan
Place-value and multiplication-and-division work with real objects, a written number check-in, and an area-and-perimeter task; a volume-and-mass measure and a scaled bar graph as portfolio artifacts.
Unit 5 — Numbers, Shapes, Patterns & Data
Overview
This unit continues formal numeracy, building on Grade 2’s place value of tens and ones and adding and subtracting within 100. Learners use place value to 1,000 to read, write, round, and compare whole numbers; multiply and divide within 100 and explain the meaning of each operation using objects, drawings, and known facts; identify arithmetic patterns in tables and number grids and explain them using the properties of operations; solve two-step word problems using the four operations and explain the relationship between addition and subtraction or multiplication and division; understand the area and perimeter of rectangles and solve problems with them in real contexts; sort shapes into categories by their attributes; measure and estimate liquid volume and mass using standard units; and draw scaled picture and bar graphs to solve problems and make comparisons. Mathematics is taught as sense-making with real things, drawn from many traditions, for everyone.
