Unit 4 — Reading, Writing & Many Languages
Overview
This unit is the heart of the year’s literacy work, building on Grade 3’s fluency and paragraph writing. Learners summarize the main idea and key details of an oral presentation or read-aloud, present a short talk to a group with clear volume and pace, use context clues and word parts such as roots, prefixes, and suffixes to figure out unfamiliar words, and compare and contrast themes, characters, or ideas within and across two texts. They write a narrative, informative, or opinion piece organized into paragraphs and carry it through a simple writing process — plan, draft, revise, edit, and publish — on their own. They learn that languages belong to families and that many languages share roots, and show respect for a peer’s language by learning and correctly pronouncing their name and a few words. Home language is honored first, and multilingualism is treated as wealth.
