Unit 5 — Numbers, Patterns, Shapes & Data

Overview

This unit grows number work from Grade 3’s place value to 1,000. Learners use place value to 1,000,000 to read, write, round, and compare multi-digit whole numbers, and add, subtract, multiply, and divide multi-digit whole numbers, using estimation to check that answers are reasonable. They generate and analyze a number or shape pattern that follows a given rule, use a letter or symbol to stand for an unknown number in a simple equation, draw and identify points, lines, line segments, rays, and angles and classify shapes by their lines and angles, apply formulas for the area and perimeter of rectangles, convert measurements within a system to solve problems involving distance, time, volume, and money, and make and interpret line plots with fractional measurements. Mathematics is taught as sense-making with real things, drawn from many traditions, for everyone.

Essential questions

  • How do I work with very large numbers and check that my answers make sense?
  • How do patterns, shapes, measurement, and data help me make sense of the world?
